چکیده

Meyer, J.F,, Performability: a retrospective and some pointers to the future, Performance Evaluation 14 (1992) 139-156. As computing and communication systems become physically and logically more complex, their evaluation calls for continued innovation with regard to measure definition, model construction/solution, and tool development. In particular, the performance of such systems is often degradable, i.e., internal or external faults can reduce the quality of a delivered service even though that service, according to its specification, remains proper (failure-free). The need to accommodate this property, using model-based evaluation methods, was the raison d~tre for the concept of performability. To set the stage for additional progress in its development, we present a retrospective of associated theory, techniques, and applications resulting from work in this area over the past decade and a half. Based on what has been learned, some pointers are made to future directions which might further enhance the effectiveness of these methods and broaden their scope of applicability.

A Multiprocessor System with Non-Preemptive Earliest-Deadline-First Scheduling Policy: A Performability Study

This paper introduces an analytical method for approximating the performability of a firm realtime system modeled by a multi-server queue. The service discipline in the queue is earliestdeadline- first (EDF), which is an optimal scheduling algorithm. Real-time jobs with exponentially distributed relative deadlines arrive according to a Poisson process. All jobs have deadlines until the end of s...

Performability Evaluation of Networked Storage Systems Using N-SPEK

This paper introduces a new benchmark tool for evaluating performance and availability (performability) of networked storage systems, specifically storage area network (SAN) that is intended for providing block-level data storage with high performance and availability. The new benchmark tool, named N-SPEK (Networked-Storage Performability Evaluation Kernel module), consists of a controller, sev...

Performability Modelling Tools and Techniques

Over the last decade considerable effort has been put in the development of techniques to assess the performance and the dependability of computer and communication systems in an integrated way. This so-called per-formability modelling becomes especially useful when the system under study can operate partially, which is for instance the case for fault-tolerant computer systems and distributed s...

Towards Performability Modeling of Software Rejuvenation

In this paper, we discuss issues in performability modeling of \software rejuvenation," a form of software fault tolerance based on occasionally cleaning up the operational environment. System factors which play a key role in such a model are identi ed. Among these, we comment on two issues of particular interest when modeling software rejuvenation: (1) the representation of the degradation in ...

State of the Art on Performability across the Sustainable Value Chain

This paper reviews recent and relevant literature on the role of performability across the sustainable value chain by first introducing pertinent material in green supply chains, life cycle analyses, and EcoDesign methodologies. A new sustainable product life cycle framework is then proposed to represent key lifetime stages of sustainable systems. New research in performability is covered acros...
